2012 NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION - FIJI SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The Association has concluded its 2012 education program in Fiji secondary schools. In conjunction with the New Zealand High Commission Suva, the 2012 Essay Competition commenced in March and finished in May. Winners were selected from 330 entries submitted by 74 secondary schools from throughout Fiji.The Judges were Lady June Hillary and Dr Satendra Singh.
The High Commission notified all schools of the results and arranged to host twenty winners to a reception and prize giving ceremony, held at the Residency in Suva. Winners from outside Suva were assisted with travel grants and those from outside Viti Levu were flown to Suva and given one night's accommodation to attend. Parents were also invited and principals.
A special guest was the High Commissioner of India, Mr Vinod Kumar, who has attended the last three years and said he greatly enjoys the opportunity to engage with youth and to hear their views. Another special guest was the Director of Fiji's Secondary Education, Mrs Basundra Kumar.
Visits were made by Dr Singh and the New Zealand Trade Commissioner to some of the winning schools such as St John's College in Ovalau and Nadroga Arya College in Sigatoka.
The Acting High Commissioner of NZ, Mr Phillip Taula told the gathering at the Residency this is an important project in the work done by the mission. Mr Taula said he greatly values the partnership with the Association and looks forward to next year's event, which will be officially announced in February 2013.
